Pollution can stop Women getting Pregnant

Pollution in air, water and environment is often dismissed easily but it has hazardous effects on fertility. Pollution can drastically affect female fertility. Environmental toxins may potentially induce negative effects in human reproductive processes”. When asked about fertility chaos, the Telangana State Secretary for Indian Fertility Society Dr. Roya Rozati said.

Female reproductive hormone function

According to Dr. Rozati: Air pollution including the substances emitted from landfill sites can be harmful. The by products of dechlorination substances can substantially alter the chances of women getting pregnant. Nearly 800 chemicals are suspected to negatively affect the female reproductive hormones.

Pollution and other Infertility causes

Substances used in contraceptive pills, environmental or occupational agents may stop women from conceiving. Use of pesticides in food consumption also decrease the chances of a woman trying to conceive. However women can use assisted reproductive technologies. She also added: Processed, canned and especially animal derived foods are examples of environmental toxins. These toxins lead to infertility problems and affect reproduction in women.

Such exposure may also delay the reproductive outcome by a year or two. Chances of IVF techniques used for assisted reproduction decrease with even moderate exposure to pollution. She added again: Environmental exposures are potentially linked with reproductive problems in nearly 5-15% of the women. Those Women undergoing treatment while exposure to toxins also involved with the risk of not just infertility but many other diseases. She mentioned the diseases as cardiovascular, obesity, diabetes, cancers, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.”

Affect of Carbon Dioxide on Women Fertility

Dr. R. S. Sharma Senior Deputy Director General and Scientist was the Chief Guest in the seminar. He said “increased pollution levels can significantly affect the fertility rate. Excessive exposure to pollution may adversely affect infertility treatment and even lead to failure. The Carbon Dioxide present in the air and some anesthetic gases may lower the quality of embryos, pregnancy and live birth rates.”

Experts opined women undergoing such fertility treatment must take precaution against pollution completely. They should maintain personal hygiene and avoid exposure to polluted air, water and environment. Doctors were advised to use air purifiers in Assisted Reproduction Labs.

The biological effects of exposure to such a cocktail of chemicals are difficult to estimate. It is calculated that the toxicity of such substances is usually tested for single chemicals, not mixtures.”

IFS Telangana Secretary Dr. Roya Rozati, ICMR Member Secretary Dr. R S. Sharma, Dr. Meera RajGopal, Dr. Lakshmi Leela, Dr. Sweta Gupta and others were also present on this occasion.
