There’s an acute shortage of expert counselors on assisted reproduction in India, said Indian Fertility Society Secretary Dr Roya Rozati. Dr Roya said “the most important part of assisted reproduction is counselling.

Addressing a gathering of experts in infertility treatment and assisted reproduction techniques, Dr Rozati in Hyderabad was in concern. During a seminar on “setting up A. R.T. clinics and labs” at Hotel Marriott, it was noted. This was the first time in Hyderabad that the infertility problem has been brought up. The rise of infertility is because of the lack of counselling, it was also observed.

Counselling:

Counselling prepares the patient psychologically to undergo treatment with ART. Sharing her experiences from UK, doctor Roya said counselors in UK visit patient’s home.

By visiting the counselors present success stories to prepare the patients psychologically. Such practice is a rarity in India. There’s acute shortage of both expert counselors and ART clinics that provide counselling in India.

Such counseling can help increase enrollment rate of couples trying to conceive. They can use assisted reproduction techniques like IVF, IUI, and ICSI among others.

Counselling also helps identify the problem specifically; she said. And by adding that an ideal ART clinic must be able to diagnose properly. Thus, apprise the diagnosed problem. With the associated treatment, therapeutic procedures and cost of treatment can be pleasant if mentioned.

Patients have to be properly counselled about the complications related to their Specific medical treatment. Consent of the patient must be documented and audio visually recorded to avoid any litigation later using consent forms.

Surrogacy:

The Surrogacy regulation bill 2016 which  regulates surrogacy in India by establishing state and Central level boards should also be followed. Dr Roya advised that surrogacy has to to be practiced only on ethical grounds and adhering to the rules and regulations specified by the government.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr PP Reddy said “Fertility experts must be able to provide an optimal environment for fertility treatment. A fully equipped lab, a location near another center for contingency plan , expert embryologist and adhere to maintaining strict protocols and quality control.

Infertility Treatment:

He said the landscape of infertility treatment has changed dramatically with the announcement of birth of Louis brown. He was the first human born through Invitro Fertilization (IVF)  in 1978 and ART is currently a common place technology. This technology has helped millions of couples world over. The explosion of this technology has introduced myriad social, ethical and medical challenges. Wide spread use of this technology has prompted public bodies, government organizations, and professional organizations to create mechanisms that evaluate the utilization of A.R.T.

Specialists also stressed on the importance of documentation, maintaining written protocols and educating even the junior staff. Every staff in the hospitals should know the basics for better treatment of the patients.
