How India did well in the second innings of Test 2
India did well in the second innings of the second Test, but failed to defend a fighting target set – 240 after scoring 266. After the fall of three quick wickets late in the session, and having lost just 4 wickets for 163, Rishabh Pant also failed. Hanuma Vihari tried his best, but wickets at the other end kept falling, but Shardul Thakur played a cameo. At that moment, it looked as if India on top. That was not possible for South Africa to put India in deep trouble as India still ended on 266 in their second innings after scoring just 202 in the first innings.
Earlier, in the first innings, Rishabh Pant played a bit nicely even after KL Rahul got out for 50. Rahul scored an important half century, but pulled a short-ball not so convincingly and was out caught in the deep. That was a big mistake.
However, Ravichandran Ashwin tested his luck to save India not to be bowled out, scoring less than 200. Hanuma Vihari played a good knock to take India to a score of 266. Again, the pitch still wasn’t too good to bat. If Rishabh Pant and Ravichandran Ashwin had played sensibly then some good-runs on the board had put more pressure on South Africa.
India was looking good and there was a good start to begin with. But India lost Mayank Agarwal, and KL Rahul. A target of 240 for South Africa again not so worrying for captain KL Rahul. The second innings score of 266 was too good, and with too good bowlers, India didn’t fought back, strongly. However, Virat Kohli to return in series decider third crucial Test match looks good.

Who will be dropped in place of Kohli?
Mayank Agarwal played not so poorly for some good starts along with top run-getter KL Rahul. However, there will be a close look at Ajinkya Rahane’s performance to match with that of Hanuma Vihari’s. Hanuma Vihari is young and will get some more chances in the future. It’s also not good to go with the experienced Ajinkya Rahane and unfortunately Virat Kohli to return in series decider in place of rising star Hanuma Vihari. It’s a tough situation. Cheteshwar Pujara also will be looked closely for his poor performances until he scored a half century. It will be good if Pujara gets another chance to perform his best and to bring India a series victory on South African soil.
KL Rahul’s bad decision and poor captaincy also costed India a valuable overseas Test match. Hanuma Vihari to be dropped in place of Virat Kohli will be no good. Hanuma Vihari performed and he should be given another chance. KL Rahul opened the fourth innings with Jasprit Bumrah and went to Ravichandran Ashwin instead of attacking more to support Bumrah. He would have gone to Mohammad Shami or Shardul Thakur instead of Ashwin in the immediate second over of the fourth innings. That was enough for South Africa to be out of pressure as conditions were not in favor of Ravichandran Ashwin.
A bold decision awaits as Kohli to return in series decider
Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara completed their half centuries in the second innings of the second Test. But one of them needs to be dropped in the third Test as Virat Kohli to return in series decider. It will be good if Ajinkya Rahane will be dropped or rested, and the bowling attack to remain unchanged. If Mohammed Siraj still unfit then Umesh Yadav should be tried. It would not be helpful to India if Ishant Sharma roped in instead of Umesh Yadav in place of Mohammed Siraj.
The best India’s playing eleven if picked by a bold decision will be too good to win the Test series. However, the poor not so young Vihari, who has just about 7 years of Test cricket left will be upset if he will be dropped. This will not make sense to pressurize youngsters as he is not so young, but a great player in his 28 years of age. Hanuma Vihari is not so young, but a rising star and if gets some more chances in the future then it would be too late. It’s also not good to go with the experienced Ajinkya Rahane and unfortunately Virat Kohli to return in series decider in place of rising star Hanuma Vihari, but it will be a bold decision if Vihari retained.
