Sarfaraz Ahmed was dropped about 4 years back from Test cricket after he wasn’t able to score in white-ball cricket. He took a sigh of relief when he scored his first runs, a boundary. However, Babar Azam made sure and helped him to score more runs and reach his fifty in his 50th Test match. The modern day great, Babar Azam in some sort of trouble under the support of not much optimistic and orthodox Sarfaraz Ahmed. Well, orthodox Sarfaraz return see many Pakistani fans as a surprising decision.
Pakistan playing him in Test cricket at home against New Zealand by dropping unorthodox Muhammad Rizwan.
Although he impressed the selectors with his 86 runs and helped Pakistan score 438 runs in the first innings. But he can’t be Pakistan’s future. His orthodox support for modern day cricket might not help Pakistan at least in this current playing conditions. However, Sarfaraz marshalling his troops, energetically by bringing in Abrar Ahmed very late right before Lunch. He’s doing his best, but he’s not at all a good captain for long-term. His theory might go wrong in some other conditions.
In from somewhere, Rizwan in the field, but stand-in captain, Sarfaraz Ahmed doing his best on day 3. He takes an excellent review this time. Sets the modern day field, which Babar also likes. Babar is taking rest due to flu and also happy as the first Kiwi wicket falls.
Devon Conway LBW to Nauman Ali. He scored 92. Kiwis under pressure although the scoreboard reads 183/1 at that time. It will be like either replace Babar Azam with Sarfaraz Ahmed as captain in Test cricket or bring-back Rizwan in the second Test. If Rizwan comes in, then Sarfaraz needs to be rested.
Future holds no ifs & buts
There are no ifs and buts and Rizwan is still a good player. However, he failed in just the previous Test series against England at home. His average isn’t that bad.
The modern day batters like Rizwan and Babar usually do not panic at all even if the team will be very near to lose. The atmosphere in the Pakistan team have changed and several other factors would see Sarfaraz’s return as a negative approach. Sarfaraz Ahmed is 35 plus year old and have to play modern day cricket in the zone of taking risks and more risks.
Sarfaraz Ahmed, the former Pakistan captain is with Babar Azam to support in which way? Usually when the wicketkeeper appeals in awe and the on-field umpire signals a “not-out”, then a review always taken. Here in Sarfaraz’s case since 188 balls bowled by Pakistan and the Kiwis score was 106, Devon Conway was actually out.
Conway nicked the ball and was caught by Sarfaraz and shockingly, Sarfaraz after appealing too much loud, told the captain Babar to not review.
One wicket can bring two, and two would also then eventually end the innings. Conway playing superbly, and was fortunate enough also with the help of a wrong decision to not review.
The Bottom Line / Orthodox Sarfaraz Returns…
Rizwan was learning to play Kiwis better post England series at home. Babar looking forward to do better captaincy this time. Everyone were looking forward to, but in between Sarfaraz steals the show. Orthodox Sarfaraz return, which’s though spoiling the leadership of Babar Azam, but comes in handy for a short time. Also, in short, Sarfaraz’s presence encouraging young players to put good performance under pressure.
Kiwis at lunch on day 3 scored 80 runs, losing two wickets, at a run-rate of 3.08.
