The rich helping poor is always obligatory by means of Zakat (Charity). The alms giving (Zakat) to the poor and needy is the fourth most important pillar in Islam for believers. Five pillars of Islam are believing in Oneness of Almighty Allah, prayers, fasting, Zakath and performing Haj. It’s compulsory (obligatory) on every adult Muslim, who is not a psychiatric patient to follow all five pillars of Islam strictly. If with some sense in the psychiatric patients found then they should follow Islam righteously. And otherwise Allah is most forgiving for those who cannot understand a single sentence completely being psychiatric patients.
Any Muslim, who owns a specific amount of wealth or savings after living costs, expenses etc should give Zakath. Their savings are called as Nisaab and calculated for which Zakath becomes compulsory. However, the amount of Zakath to be paid is just 2.5 % from their Nisaab.
“The alms are only for the poor, the needy… and for those in debt, for Allah’s Cause to the traveler, who cut off from everything. It’s a duty imposed by Allah. And Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise.” [Al-Quran 9:60]
Zakath is not considered as charity but it’s an obligation (compulsory duty). And Zakat is to help those, who are in need. It is also an act to help free us from excessive desires and greed. Muslims should learn self-discipline and honesty even though they’re rich.
